Agenda for 10/28/2013 - 11/1/2013

Agenda for 10/28/2013 - 11/1/2013
  • Monday 10/28/2013 - Cellular Respiration! We've talked about how autotrophs use sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into high energy sugars and oxygen, now let's talk about how we break down that food to make ENERGY to fuel our bodies!!!
  • Tuesday 10/29/2013 - More Cellular Respiration!! - Graphic Organizer
  • Wednesday 10/30/2013 - Lab - Tiny Bubbles - Let's see cellular respiration in action! We'll hypothesize which sugars yeast will break down faster then test them in the lab.
  • Thursday 10/31/2013 - Chapter 9 Vocabulary Quiz - Review Chapter 9
  • Friday 11/1/2013 - Chapter 9 Test

Good luck on your tests on Thursday! Have a great extended weekend, and come back ready to respire!!

This Week...

Agenda for 10/20/2013-10/24/2013
  • Monday (10/21) - Chapter 8 test - (100pts: multiple choice, short answer, essay). Chapter 9 Vocab. (14 terms)
  • Tuesday (10/22) - Midterm test - (Please give your best effort on this.  There is a chance here to bring your grade up.  If you do poorly it will not hurt your grade.) Please bring something to work on in case you finish your test early!
  • Wednesday (10/23) - Planet Earth - Plants!
  • Thursday (10/24) - Testing day (1/2 day of school).
I saw LOTS of you out and about for the Donut Dash today, nice work! It was a wonderful event for an even better cause, thank you for taking part!  Hopefully none of you are looking at this right now because you are studying so diligently for your Chapter 8 test tomorrow. See you then!

Study Guide for Chapter 8

Hi all,
The study guide for Chapter 8 is complete, and I saved it correctly this time (yay me!) You can find it here on Mr. Johns' website, http://www.herrinhs.org/Teachers/EricJohns/Biology.htm
It's under Chapter 8 Test Review.

Take a look at it, so you will know what to expect and how best to answer all of these pressing questions about photosynthesis!

Change in plans...

I made a bit of a colossal mistake yesterday and the study guide I had been working on for you all got lost in a different dimension.  As a result the chapter 8 test will be moved back to Monday, October 21st. This will give you a little more time to study the material.  So, the agenda for the rest of the week looks like this:
  • Thursday (10/17) - Conducting experiments on rates of photosynthesis.
  • Friday (10/18) - Lab Reports on experiments - Review for Chapter 8 test.
If you do poorly it will not hurt your grade.)
  • Wednesday (10/23) - Chapter 9 - Respiration
  • Thursday (10/24) - Testing day (1/2 day of school).
I know most of you are feeling something like this right now...
but take the extra time and study the material.  Maybe even go outside and think about how plants help you!

Paper Chromatography example

If you lost your paper chromatography paper, or if it was unreadable, use the example below for your lab assignment that is due Tuesday, October 15th.
For Strip A:
  • Solvent front: 7.2cm
  • Orange pigment (Carotene): 6.8cm
  • Yellow pigment (Xanthophyll): 5.5cm
  • Dark Green pigment (Chlorophyll b): 6.3cm
For Strip B:
  • Solvent front: 8.5cm
  • Yellow pigment (Xanthophyll): 4.4cm
  • Dark Green (Chlorophyll b):6cm
  • Orange (Carotene): 6.4cm
  • Light Green (Chlorophyll a): 6.7cm

Calculate the Rf factor for one of these strips.  Be ready to turn your lab in on Tuesday morning.  Hope you are having a wonderful weekend and exploring nature a bit!
